How you can help

Become a Magpie Monitor

There are several ways that you can help monitor Yellow-billed Magpie populations.

  • POINT COUNTS (Variable radius point count) This is where we need you the most. Count magpies four times a year at a specific point (we'll help you pick out a point that is convenient for you). This method will provide the best data for assessing Yellow-billed Magpie abundance (how many are there?) and distribution (where are they found?).
  • ROOST COUNTS
A Roost Count involves counting birds as they leave the roost each morning.

  • ADOPT-A-NEST ~~~ MONITOR NESTS
You can Monitor nests by keeping track of magpies as they fly twigs to their nests and count the number of active nests you find.

  • COLLECT FEATHERS FOR DNA STUDIES
At selected roost and nest sites you may also get involved in collecting shed feathers for DNA analysis.

  • HELP US IN THE OFFICE
If you have skills with graphic design and website development, can volunteer at least 4 hours per week, and can periodically travel to UC Davis, email Holly at hbernest@ucdavis.edu.
